Fishing Report For May 2017

May 2017 Fish Report

The weather in May was not as good as April and we had to cancel or reschedule a bunch of charters. Thanks everyone for understanding the potential danger that you faced if we ran the trip. Passenger and crew safety is number one in my book.

The rock fishing continued to be very productive for the majority of our anglers that got out. They caught an assortment of quality Rockfish, Lingcod and Boccaccio.

The Yellowtail fishing was fairly productive for a few or our charters as they continue to migrate in larger numbers into our local waters. Many more Yellowtail have been seen than caught. We also caught a trophy Thresher Shark this month weighing 165lbs. Amazing powerful fish and very tasty to eat.

Our offshore season is about to kick off so “stand by” for some exciting news next month on how we did and what we caught.

Thanks again to everyone for choosing Coletta Sport Fishing for your fishing adventure.

Epic Dorado Fishing on the Wanu! Caught over 13 Dorado and a hand full of Yellow Tail. Great video Chuck!

All You Want Dorado “Mahi Mahi” (Easy Limits)

Went out with a really nice bunch of guys last weekend (finally figured out how to get the pictures off my camera). We left the fish biting (easy limits) and went looking for a different species of fish to catch to no avail. All of you did great on the Dorado and look forward in fishing with you again next year. Thanks Guys!

San Diego Dolphin Fishing

“Exciting Day Catching Some Yellow Fin Tuna”
A returning customer/friend from Arizona came into town and fished with us yesterday with some of his friends. Fishing over all was on the slow side but manage some quality Tuna. I will never get over the look on Dave’s face when he got picked up by his fish and the reel was screaming, Great Stuff! Also seeing the look on your face when you got hammered on the troll and watching you fight your fish, great memories. Not to mention Randy’s face when he was battling his fish on light gear. Ernie get back home safe and thanks again for choosing Coletta Sport Fishing again for your fishing adventure. See you next year.

2015 Season Is Here!

Excellent Yellow Tail Fishing Yellow all around the Coronado Islands. Most of the quality fish are coming from the Flats. Also the Sardine is now out fishing the surface and yoyo iron although it is still possible to catch yellows on them. Locating bird schools and other signs of fish on the surface is the ticket in locating these fish.

In Us waters from Imperial Beach about 3-4 miles off the Pier to the inner edge of the 9 a some Yellow Tail where found under bird schools.

Update: Bluefin where found again at the 43 Fathom spot in the 12 to 50lb class biting on Sardines.

Here are some photos from recent trips:

Here is a quick video that shows our boat and recent trips, Enjoy:

The ‘Catching’ Continues!

We have been fishing every day although had to cancel some trips due to weather.  When the weather gave us a break, we have had awesome fishing.  Here are the pics:

The Fishing Continues To Be Great

I have had the opportunity to take some great people out fishing.  The adventures were action packed.  Here are the photos from recent trips:

Water Temps Are Excellent and So Is The Fishing!

El Nino is Here and He brought the fish with him! Water temps are righteous now for some awesome fishing.

Quality Yellowfin and Bluefin Tunas, Yellow Tail and some Dorado started showing up for the party on all the major banks in the San Diego and Mexican waters, due to the El Nino conditions, and Coletta Sportfishing Charters has your All Access Pass to get you past the “velvet ropes.”

Trolling with certain feather size and color (especially the blue & white color) combinations is producing big fish around the dolphin and porpoise pods. Some trophy fish are coming off kelp patties as well on live bait.

The average Yellowfin/Bluefin weight has been in the 20 lb with a few close to 50lbs. Yellow tails are ranging from 6lb to 30lbs. Epic fishing!

If the offshore scene slows down we have no problem targeting Rock Fish and Calico Bass in the kelps.

Call or email now our dates are filling up! If you want to see way they put heavy drags on reels lets go fishing.

Tuna2

Spring is Here and so are the Yellowtails!

April is in full swing and so is the Yellowtail bite around La Jolla and the Coronado Islands! The bite has been steady for almost a month now, with the bulk of the Yellowtails being found all around the islands and La Jolla. Most of the fish are being found off bird schools on live bait or surface irons. If the fish are deep then the yo yo iron is the ticket.

We caught most of our Yellowtails on the surface iron with blue and white Tady to be the top color. We have also had great success slow trolling live mackerels and sardines when the fish where on the surface and spread out. When we metered the fish the Sumo Jr  Chrome and Blue was the ticket for amazing yo yo fishing.

The average Yelolwtail was just under 20lbs but we caught a few that went over 40 lbs! They were tackle busters! When the Yellowtail bite turns off, we’ve had no problem targeting Rockfish and Lingcod at a few nearby spots.

Our dates are filling up quick! Please call or email if you would like to get out and tangle with these Yellowtails!
